Lung Volume Reduction Surgery and The NETT Trials

This site from the National Heart Lung Blood Institute (NHLBI) does an excellent job of describing everything about lung volume reduction surgery and the trials that Medicare ran. As many know, lung reduction surgery removes one lobe from a lung, usually the most damaged one, to allow the remaining good tissue to expand out, thus allowing more air flow in the lung. This site tells you all about it. The ins and outs. Alpha 1 patients were not allowed in the original trials, but many have undergone this surgery. Some have been given great relief while others received a short reprieve of several years and went on to transplant. Still others are having lung reduction after single lung transplants because the native lung continues to expand and encroaches the space in the thoracic cavity.

If you would like to talk with an Alpha who has experienced lung volume reduction, give us a call at 1-866-367-2122
